Backpacker Sleepervans offer low cost rental rates and comfortable New Zealand self-drive holidays for young budget adventure seeker travellers. The vehicles are modern, funky designed vans that capture the style and imagination of free spirited travellers. We realise that young independent globetrotters are not interested in ‘just being a number’ and lumbering around scenic New Zealand in large mass-produced, expensive motorhomes. With our sleepervans you are guaranteed to stand out from the crowd along the main routes or off the beaten track. Each of our economy vans has an exciting unique New Zealand theme professionally applied to the exterior of the vehicles, while the interior is packed with special design features not found elsewhere.

Late pick-up or early return of vehicle does not entitle the hirer to any refund of the unused portion of the rental. Branches Sleepervans has branches close to Auckland and Christchurch Airports. Queenstown Airport, Dunedin Airport, Nelson Airport, Wellington Airport, Picton Ferry Terminal and Greymouth Train Station pick ups and drop offs are available on application for a relocation fee of NZ$745 by prior arrangement only. Operational times are restricted by travel limitations and by bus/air/train times. Branches are open seven days a week. Office Hours High Season 01 October - 30 April: Monday to Sunday 8am to 5pm
Low Season 01 May - 30 September: Monday to Sunday 9am to 4pm All branches are closed on Christmas Day (25 December). The latest vehicle collection time from the depot is 4.00pm, (3.00pm winter) so please consider your hire start date with this in mind if your flight arrival does not allow sufficient time to be at the depot by these times. A $50 late collection fee can be pre arranged if you cannot arrive before this time. This is not guaranteed and applies only within 1 hour after closing time if agreed. Pick Up/Drop Off Locations Due to popular demand, Tui Sleepervans now offers pick up and/or drop off in non depot locations. This service is only available for the hire of Delxue Sleepervan. PLEASE NOTE that a surcharge of NZ$745 applies per pick up and/or drop off in these locations and pick up or drop off times may be restricted. Remote Location Hires (Non Depot) Wellington Airport - Picton Ferry - Nelson Airport - Greymouth Airport - Queenstown Airport - Dunedin Airport Please note the following changes to our providing this service:
B – the appropriate Bond is to be paid into our bank account via Bank transfer only and only to be received not less than 7 days prior to the date of pick up.
C – Bond can be refunded as follows:
Budget Sleepervan- There is an excess of NZ$2,000 (NZ$3,000 for drivers aged under 25 years) included within our standard rates. Optional Coverages In addition to the insurance cover set out above, the hirer may also choose the Bond Waiver Insurance (BWI) options or Windscreen/Tyre Insurance (WTI) by so indicating on the Rental Document. The amount of that excess and the daily rate payable in respect of BWI is dependent upon the age of the hirer and the type of vehicle hired. Bond waiver/excess reduction (BWI) You are fully insured in case of accident damage. The Liability is applicable regardless of who is at fault and must be paid upon the completion of the rental period. If the hirer is not at fault and the third party admits liability, then Tui Sleepervans will refund the amount charged to the hirer upon receipt of payment from the third party. Please note the hirer is fully liable for all towing/retrieval costs of the damaged vehicle regardless of the purchase of the Excess Reduction. Please be aware that once the Excess Reduction is selected and confirmed with Tui Sleepervans, the cost of the Excess Reduction Option is non-refundable. The bond can be reduced by purchasing one of the following Reduction Options: Reduction Option 1: Deluxe Sleepervan –
This option can be purchased by paying an additional NZ$25 per day (NZ$30 per day for drivers under 25 years) reduces excess to NZ$1,800 and only a credit card imprint is required.
Budget Sleepervan –
This option can be purchased by paying an additional NZ$15 per day (NZ$20 per day for drivers under 25 years) reduces excess to NZ$800 and only a credit card imprint is required. Reduction Option 2: Deluxe Sleepervan –
This option can be purchased by paying an additional NZ$45 per day (NZ$50 per day for drivers under 25 years) reduces excess to NZ$0 and only a credit card imprint is required.
Budget Sleepervan –
This option can be purchased by paying an additional NZ$30 per day (NZ$35 per day for drivers under 25 years) reduces excess to NZ$0 and only a credit card imprint is required. Sleepervans strongly recommends our customers to take the bond waiver insurance to minimise excess exposure and travel with peace of mind. Inclusions Reduction Option 2 cover includes the following extras:
Repairs up to NZ$100 may be affected without authorisation and will be reimbursed upon presentation of a receipt. For amounts over NZ$100, Backpacker Sleepervans will need to be informed in advance. Repairs will be approved provided the customer was not directly responsible for the damage. Receipts must be submitted for any repair or the claim will not be paid. Customer care on road assistance Any problems associated with the vehicle, including equipment failure, must be reported to Backpacker Sleepervans as soon as possible and within 24 hours in order to give Backpacker Sleepervans the opportunity to rectify the problem during the rental. Failure to do so will compromise any claims for compensation. Backpacker Sleepervans do not accept liability for any claims submitted after this period. Infringements and administration fees Backpacker Sleepervans reserves the right to charge the hirer for any speeding, toll way or parking fines and/or vehicle damage including Third Party property damage not reported on return of the vehicle. In addition to these costs, Backpacker Sleepervans reserve the right to charge for associated administration costs for processing the fines (irrespective of excess) and/or all insurance claims in the event of the customer not having a NIL excess. In addition to the costs associated per fine and/or insurance claim, an administration fee of $60 will be applicable. Change of vehicle Should the vehicle booked be unavailable through unforeseen circumstances, we reserve the right to substitute an alternative vehicle without prior notification and at no extra cost. This shall not constitute a breach of contract and does not entitle the renter to a refund. Vehicle category Vehicles cannot be requested by make, model or year. Only by vehicle category. Voluntary downgrade Should the renter decide to take a lesser vehicle than booked within 14 days of pick up or during the rental then they will not be entitled to any refund. Limit of liability In the event of no alternative vehicle being available to the renter our liability is limited to a refund of the hire charge or in the case of mechanical failure (unless caused by the renter) the remainder of the hire period. One way hires It's is possible to commence your hire in Auckland and finish it in Christchurch (or vice versa) if the rental period is a minimum of fourteen (14) days and a one way fee will apply. Where pick-ups originate from North Island and return in South Island and the pick-up is between:
– 1 April and 30 September – a one way fee of NZ $100.00 applies.
– 1 October and 31 March – a one way fee of NZ $200.00 applies. Where pick-ups originate from South Island and return to North Island and the pick-up is between:
– 1 April and 30 September – no one way fee applies.
– 1 October and 31 March – a one way fee of NZ $100.00 applies One way hires of shorter duration are subject to availability and a fee. Please enquire.
Short hires of under 5 days can be available. Mileage is limited to 150Km per day. Extra km's will be charged @ $0.35. An additional $50 cleaning fee will apply. On-road assistance - mechanical faults The liability of Sleepervans extends to either replacing your vehicle with a similar one, or refunding your hire charge for any days you lose the total use of the vehicle. If the vehicle has any mechanical failures these problems must be reported to Sleepervans as soon as possible in order to give Sleepervans the opportunity to rectify the problems during the rental. The hirer is not entitled to any refund at the end of the hire period unless Sleepervans has been advised of the problem earlier, and has been given the opportunity to rectify the situation. Sleepervans does not accept any liability for any claims made after this point. Sleepervans is not liable for any delay in repair caused by the breakdown occurring on a weekend or a public holiday. A refund can be requested if the breakdown has directly caused a delay in travel of 48 hours or more, if the delay is less than 48 hours in one location Sleepervans can deny the refund request at its own discretion. Maintenance and repairs - equipment faults The hirer shall take all reasonable care to ensure that the vehicle is properly maintained. This shall include regular checks to the oil, water and batteries. The hirer shall be liable for any cost associated with the incorrect use of fuel (fuel being diesel or petrol), including putting fuel in the water tank. The failure of accessories such as TV, DVD, CD player, microwave, gas heater, air conditioning unit, fridge and hot water heater do not constitute a breakdown. Any problems associated with the vehicles equipment, must be reported to Sleepervans as soon as possible and within 24 hours in order to give Sleepervans the opportunity to rectify the problem. Failure to do so will compromise any claims as we cannot accept liability for any claims submitted after this period. Sleepervans will endeavour to facilitate on-road repairs however should the repair not be possible or fail the hirer is not entitled to a vehicle change or compensation. No alternative accommodation or food items will be paid for during down time. CANCELLATIONS Once a booking has been confirmed and a deposit paid the booking is considered live and is subject to the cancellation policy.
The initial deposit paid is non-refundable. In addition to forfeiting your deposit, the following charges also apply:
- 23 - 32 days 20% of total reservation cost
- 13 - 22 days 40% of total reservation cost
- 4 - 12 days 75% of total reservation cost
- 3 days or No Show 100% of total reservation cost In all cases the minimum amount retained is the deposit. No refunds for cancellations made after the travel or travel date has commenced. If the vehicle is returned early for any reason whatsoever after travel has commenced then no refund is available. Booking amendments
The rates on this website are often heavily discounted. This is due to our negotiated rates and bulk buying power. On very rare occasions, a rate may be displayed incorrectly due to our, or a vehicle supplier's error. In such a case, if you book with us at a quoted rate that is incorrect, we will notify you of any price change and give you the option to proceed or cancel. We make every effort to keep information on our site up to date, but we cannot guarantee this website is free of errors or omissions and retain the right to update or change the information published at any time.
To the extent permitted by law we/the owners of this website will not be liable to you or to any third party (whether in contract, tort, or otherwise) for any direct, indirect or consequential loss or damage (including but not limited to any accident, injury, delay or loss of enjoyment) arising out of your reliance upon information contained on this website, including but not limited to your use (or inability to use) any products or services described or procured through this website.
When you pick up your vehicle, you will be required to sign a rental agreement with the supplier of the vehicle. Your rental and use of the vehicle will be governed by the terms of the rental agreement and any other documentation or information provided to you by the supplier at the time you pick up your vehicle. The rental agreement is between you and the supplier and we will not be liable to you or to any third party in relation to the terms of the supplier’s rental agreement or any other documentation provided to you by the supplier at the time of pick up.
While we will make reasonable efforts to ensure we are representing only reputable suppliers, we make no warranty about the fitness or suitability of any third party (supplier) product or service and will not accept responsibility for the quality or fitness of any vehicle. If you encounter issues with the vehicle whilst on hire, you MUST report these issues directly to the relevant supplier at the earliest possible time. This will allow the supplier to remedy any issues and minimise any inconvenience to you. If you fail to report any vehicle issues during your rental, it is likely that compensation will not be offered. We welcome feedback from our customers on their experience with our suppliers. We may, at our discretion, provide you with reasonable assistance in resolving any dispute you may have with a supplier.
Our total liability to you in relation to your use of this website and the information contained on this website will not exceed the dollar amount of the deposit we have received from you in relation to your booking/rental. Refunds will not be made for bookings cancelled due to inclement weather. Again, we strongly recommend that you take out travel insurance. Your use of this website is governed by the laws of New Zealand and the jurisdiction of the New Zealand courts.
To make a booking you must complete our booking form which is easy to follow and secured with the latest encryption technology. Once we receive your form, we will, subject to availability, confirm your booking by emailing you a confirmation voucher and invoice. The deposit required to secure your vehicle (as shown on the secure booking page) will only be processed on your credit card when your booking is confirmed. Please note that a 2% credit card or debit card surcharge will be added when your payment is processed.
A booking is confirmed when you have been emailed a confirmation voucher and at this stage the deposit is processed on your card and becomes non-refundable and any cancellation fees stated in the supplier's terms apply. Upon receipt of your confirmation, please check your details carefully and notify us immediately if there are any incorrect details, as it may not be possible to make changes at a later date.
If you are booking via phone, please make sure you have read the terms and conditions of the vehicle you wish to rent first. Our reservations consultant will ask you if you have read the terms and agree to them before proceeding. The onus is always on the renter to ensure they make themselves fully aware of the terms displayed on our website.
In booking on this website you acknowledge that we disclose your information to your selected Supplier in order to provide the requested rental services.
Please note that some suppliers treat an amendment as a new booking and apply the rate current at the time the amendment is made to recalculate the entire booking amount (not just the days changed). If the rental period is increased, an additional deposit may be required. If the rental period is shortened which results in a reduction of the rental charges, the deposit amount will remain unchanged, and the difference between the original and revised deposit is forfeited (it cannot be used towards remaining rental charges). To request a change to a confirmed booking, please use the alterations request link on your confirmation. Any alterations are subject to availability and the approval of the supplier. In addition to the alteration policy of the supplier stated in their terms, the following charges will apply:
Motorhome rental alterations (all charges stated in local currency): 25.00
The alteration fee will not be charged if your alteration request is not possible.
Vehicle Capacity and fitness to drive
Under no circumstances are you permitted to carry more passengers than the vehicle you rent is legally registered to carry, and if you do your insurance may be invalidated. The number of seatbelts (and passengers) is indicated next to each vehicle on this website. Luggage capacity where shown is an indication only and we will not be responsible should you be unable to fit your entire luggage into a vehicle. It is your responsibility to choose a journey that is within your capabilities. A vehicle supplier can refuse to rent a vehicle to any person who is in their opinion unfit to drive or does not meet eligibility requirements. In such circumstances we will have no further liability to you.
We are committed to providing a quality service and aim for complete customer satisfaction. In the event of cancellation, any refunds or penalties are detailed in the terms and conditions of your selected vehicle that you are asked to read and accept at time of booking. In the event you are unsatisfied with our service, please contact us within 48 hours of placing your booking or request and we will work to resolve any issues and determine if compensation is due. In the event you have completed your rental and are unhappy with your vehicle, we are happy to assist you in seeking compensation from the operator of the vehicle.
